Bamboo Plants

Bamboo plants have become very popular in the last years and it does not surprise me. Bamboo plants have so many advantages. Bamboo is a grass but unlike the characteristics you may know from grass, bamboo plants are different. Many gardeners therefore like them because they do not need any mowing. There is almost no bamboo plants care needed.

A bamboo plant grow just from alone and they grow fast. Bamboo stays green the whole year and it is a robust grass. It is pretty insect and disease resistant, which is just one of the many reasons why many love bamboo.

Nor this reason and also because bamboo plants are very flexible and strong, bamboo has been used in construction for thousands of years. It is also perfect for building your own fence in your garden for example. It is a natural and cheap privacy shield, no matter how big your garden or your house is. Bamboo can grow several meters quickly.

Bamboo plants in the garden look beatiful. I love to break off one piece of bamboo to play with it with my dog. He likes chasing my bamboo stick with the long leafs. We play until he tore everything apart. I have no bad feelings because I know the bamboo plants grow and grow and grow, often more than I like it!

The plants are not only robust and fast growers, they also can spread quickly. To keep them from spreading just cut them back in autumn. If you do not want them to grow too high then you should plant them in containers.

If you want to remove bamboo completely from your garden it may be difficult. You must remove the roots otherwise you have no chance. But even that might not be enough. Some plants spread their seeds throughout the whole garden.

Transplanting bamboo house plants is easy therefore. Just take them with the roots and they will do well.

I have a small pond in the garden and it was one of the best things I ever did to it. It really is a place of piece and a habitat for many animals. My pond is small but it is still amazing how much live there is. The bamboo plants fit in perfect harmony into this picture. When the wind whistles through the leaves it feels like you hear the sea. I also have many dragonflies who seem to like the bamboo plants a lot.

Before you get bamboo plants you should decide between runners or clumpers. The clumpers have short roots and do not spread much (phyllostachys aureosulcata spectabilis or himalayacalamus hookerianus). The runners (golden or temple bamboo) spread pretty quickly and would be perfect for building a natural fence or hedge for example.

Caring for bamboo plants is easy. Just make sure they have plenty of water.
